Intermediate and Middle at Gateway College Preparatory School
At the Core: Highly Qualified, Invested Teachers:
The backbone of any school is its teachers. Gateway teachers (at all levels) are chosen for their passion, drive, and commitment to not only teaching academic content but to the development of the whole child. Prospective teachers go through a thorough screening and interview process which includes guided interactions with current staff and students. While all teachers hired must be highly qualified (according to state and federal guidelines), Gateway is also committed to attracting, developing, and retaining certified teachers that have an entrepreneurial spirit. We are proud of the diverse backgrounds and experiences that our teaching staff brings to our school.
The Focus of our Classes:
Intermediate (grades 5-6) and middle (grades 7-8) school classrooms at Gateway are centered on strong instructional practices in all classes. Students in these grades will take courses that have one common objective: to prepare them for the rigors of a college preparatory high school experience. Since all high school courses are offered at the pre-AP or AP level, developing the ability to think critically, write effectively, and produce a variety of products is stressed throughout these grades. However, this does not simply mean “giving more work” but rather means that students will have to learn a critical way of thinking.
Curricula in ALL areas (core and enrichment) will be developed by teachers in accordance with the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). Gateway strongly believes that teachers develop their curricula with creativity and relevance in mind.
A Longer, More Enriching, and More Engaging School Day
Gateway strives to be responsive to the needs of our families, and is proud to say that we will have families with students in elementary, middle, and high school. For this reason, we are aligning our start and end times so that transportation and other logistics are easier for parents. The school day will run from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. However, students can be dropped off as early as 7:45 AM and grades 5-6 may stay as late as 6:00 PM in our after school academic program. Whenever students are on campus, they will be supervised by adult staff members and screened volunteers who must pass criminal background checks. Students may bring their own lunch, if desired, or purchase lunch from our on-site cafeteria.
Time before school and after school may also include participation in tutoring, clubs, sports, and other activities designed to enhance the overall development of students.
Gateway provides a small, intimate learning environment with ample (and growing) enrichment opportunities for students of all ages. Our goal is to prepare students for the rigors of 4 year college, while offering students an engaging, hands-on education. Due to our small size, the level of articulation and cooperation amongst our staff is higher than that in a traditional school district. Not only can teachers cooperatively plan and create courses and curricula, but courses and skills can be aligned from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
By nurturing students from an early age, and working cooperatively with parents, our students will be ready for the challenges that await them as adults as they are taught to enjoy learning and are able to help create a positive school culture.
