What is AVID?
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system for elementary through higher education that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance.
The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.
“While others talk about what should be done to prepare students for college, AVID is doing it. For more than 30 years, the AVID College Readiness System has helped thousands of students, many of whom are overlooked and underserved, rise above the obstacles they face to achieve academic success.”
AVID at Gateway College Preparatory School
Gateway College Preparatory School is in its second year implementing AVID at the secondary level grade 6-12 and in our first year at the elementary level grades 4 and 5. We will apply for secondary certification at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. Students in grades 6-12 are exposed to AVID strategies in their core classes and have the opportunity to take an AVID elective class for more focused implementation of the research-based strategies needed for college success. Gateway College Preparatory School plans to expand AVID to the lower elementary in the future.
